Cel mai simplu mod de a conecta un mac la un modem Zapp pe USB este aplicatia VZAccess de pe Verizon USA.

Mergeti aici si urmati instructiunile de mai jos:

Folositi numarul de telefon 928-699-0140 pentru a downloda aplicatia.

Sau si mai simplu, luati aplicatia direct de aici.

Instalati aplicatia, apoi alegeti un model de modem pe USB (preferabil USB720), selectati NationalAccess - BroadbandAccess, introduceti modemul Zapp in USB si apasati pe Connect WWAN.
Eu am testat pe un MacBook cu Mac OS X v10.4 "Tiger" si a mers fara nici o problema.

Weekend-ul am fost la Balea Lac sa vizitez hotelul de gheata. Am mers cu masina pana la Balea Cascada, de acolo am luat telecabina (30 lei dus/intors) pana sus la Balea Lac. Dupa ce am asteptat 40 minute la coada, am urcat in telecabina si in 10 minute eram sus. Primul lucru pe care l-am vazut era biserica de gheata si m-am dus repede acolo :
Biserica este foarte interesant construita.

Hotelul este si mai impresionant, deoarece este mai mare.

Trec azi pe la Unirea sa vad live un Wii, intreb diverse, gen cat costa bla bla si apare un pusti care se baga in seama, il interesa cat costa un XBox 360 modat, ii raspunde doamna de acolo, dupa care pustiu intreaba cat costa un joc pirat, la care faza super tare, il corecteaza doamna "nu jocuri pirat, back-uri si costa 50 RON".

Ieri am tras o fuga pana in Rousse. Am trecut granita cu pasaportul desi era ok si cu buletinul. Taxa de pod la noi e 21 RON, la bulgari e 6 EUR, de fapt 5 EUR fara chitanta, ca nu au sa-ti dea rest la 10/20 EUR. In fine, bine ca la noi macar am primit chitanta.
Am fost prin centru care e destul de ok pentru shopping. Cred ca erau mai multi romani pe acolo decat bulgari :) Dupa ce am inghetat bine, cred ca erau -5 grade, am fost prin Kaufland si Metro. Preturile sunt mai mici ca la noi, de exemplu un tv lcd Samsung de 82 cm diagolana dai 1559 leva, care inseamna 800 EUR, deci 2701 RON. Acel televizor l-am vazut la noi cu 3200 RON, deci se merita un drum pana acolo pentru asa ceva.

Zilele astea vreau sa schimb Apache cu lighttpd. Mai am doar cateva reguli mod_rewrite specifice Apache de modificat.
Vreau sa fac schimbarea deoarece lighttpd este mult mai rapid ca apache, consuma mult mai putine resurse si are si un modul interesant de flash video streaming.

Astazi am compilat ultima versiune de ffmpeg care este acum functionala pe sweblog.net. Tot ce mai am de facut este sa modific administrarea deoarece nu mai este nevoie de poza preview pentru video, aceasta fiind generata de ffmpeg.

La un curs, profesoara le explica studentilor cum se va desfasura examenul ce trebuia dat a doua zi. Incheie precizand ca nu vor fi acceptate scuze din partea celor care nu se vor prezenta, numai cazuri extreme cum ar fi un accident grav sau moartea vreunei rude. Un tip glumet din spatele salii intreaba cu un aer cinic: - Printre aceste motive putem include si oboseala extrema datorata activitatii sexuale? Toata sala izbucneste in ras in timp ce profesoara astepta ca toti sa se calmeze. Dupa care ii raspunde glumetului: - Acesta nu e un motiv de scuza. Ieri incercam sa downlodez pe router (WL-500gP) cu ctorrent de pe un tracker romanesc si imi da mesaj : "acest client este banat, verificati lista de clienti acceptati". Am luat frumusel sursa ctorrent, am luat makefile-ul de pe dev.openwrt.org, l-am modificat putin ca sa mearga compilat ca pachet direct in Openwrt RC6, pe care il compilasem acu vreo 2 luni cu niste optiuni de care aveam nevoie la momentul respectiv. L-am facut sa trimita ca user agent uTorrent/1600 care este un client acceptat. I-am si adaugat si optiunea de a schimba user agent-ul din command line. Daca il vreti, mail me.

In ultima vreme tot primesc emailuri de genul asta :) si trebuie sa recunosc ca si eu fac parte din GENERATIA X.

Aceasta este o scrisoare nostalgica, adresata celor care fac parte din generatia NOASTRA, GENERATIA X. Nascuti la inceputul anilor 80, vedem acum in anul 2006 cum casa parintilor nostri este de 50 de ori mai scumpa decat atunci cand au cumparat`o ei, si realizam ca noi o sa platim pentru casele noastre in jur de 50 de ani. Nu avem amintiri despre primii pasi pe luna, nici despre razboaie sangeroase, dar ne pricepem la istorie si la politica mai mult decat cred batranii, care bombane in spatele nostru ca „noi nu stim nimic". Suntem ultima generatie care a jucat ascunsa, Castel,Ratele si Vanatorii, Tara tara vrem ostasi, Prinsa, Sticluta cu otrava, Pac Pac, Hotii si vardistii, ultimii are au strigat „Un doi trei la perete stai", ultimii care jucam cu banu la groapa sau la perete pe abtibilde cu masini din pachetele de guma Turbo, ultimii care au folosit telefoanele cu fise, dar primii care ne-am jucat pe jocurile video (remember Mario?) si primii care am vazut desene animate color.

Noi am purtat jeansi elastici, pantaloni evazati, geci de blugi de la turci, iar cine avea firme gen Lee sau Diesel era deja lider de gasca. Baietii si-au scris numarul fotbalistului preferat cu pasta de dinti pe tricouri, iar fetele si-au cusut pe blugi stelute si inimioare. Noi am dat Capacitate, nu am dat grile la admitere si am fost ultimii Soimi ai Patriei, cu costumele alea groaznic de nepotrivite cromatic.

Am invatat poezii in romaneste la gradinita, nu in engleza, si am cantat MULTI ANI TRAIASCA nu HAPPY BIRTHDAY la aniversari. Spuneam misto si fain in loc de cool. Am sorbit din ochi Beverly Hills, Melrose Place , Twin Peaks, Dallas.. si cine zice ca nu s`a uitat ori minte ori nu avea inca televizor. Ne uitam la desenele animate de la italieni si ne era ciuda ca nu avem si noi subtitrare sa intelegem de ce naiba s`a certat Mila cu Shiro.

Reclamele de pe posturile straine ne innebuneau, si abia asteptam sa vina si la noi inghetata Magnum, sau pustile alea absolut superbe de apa. Intre timp, ne consolam cu Tango cu vanilie si ciocolata si clasicele bidoane umplute cu apa de la robinet, care turnate in cap ne provocau pneumonii. Si uite un motiv bun sa nu mergem la scoala.. Noi am ascultat si Metallica si Pink Floyd si Ace of Base, si DJ Bobo, si Michael Jackson, si Backstreet Boys, si Take That, si inca nu auzisem de manele, singurele melodii de joc fiind horele la chefuri, la care nimeni nu stia pasii, dar toti dansam. Dar spre deosebire de copiii din ziua de azi, am auzit atat de Abba, si de Queen, cat si de noile nume gen 50 Cent si Britney Spears. Pe ei daca ii intrebi, „muzica a inceput cu Backstreet Boys, care nici nu mai sunt cool acum, orikum!" Am citit Licurici, Pif si Hercule (care aveau cadou niste jucarii bestiale) si am baut Cico si sucuri de la tec fara sa ne fie teama ca au prea multe e`uri, iar la scoala beam toata clasa dintr`o sticla de suc fara teama de virusi. Noi am injurat arbitrul care ne`a furat la meciul cu Danemarca, si poate ca tot noi i`am trimis 10000 de mailuri de „dulce". Noi nu ne dadeam bip`uri, ne fluieram sa iesim afara, noi nu aveam dolby surround, taceam toti ca sa auzim actiunea filmului, nu aveam Nintendo sau Playstation ci jocuri tetris si jocuri de televizor, de care ne plictiseam la o luna dupa ce le cumparam si le uitam pe dulap, pline de praf. Abia asteptam la chefuri sa jucam Fantanita, sau Flori, fete, filme sau baieti, sau Sticla, sau Adevar sau Provocare, sau orice ne dadea un pretext sa pupam !pe gura! pe cine „iubeam". Noi suntem cei care inca au mai „cerut (sau li s`a cerut)prietenia", care inca roseam la cuvantul „SEX", care dadeam cu banul care sa intre in farmacie sa cumpere prezervative, pe care apoi sa le umplem cu apa si sa le aruncam in cap la colegi, care am completat mii de oracole, sperand ca iubitul sau iubita va citi acolo unde scrie "De cine iti place?" ca ne place de el/ea. Noi am auzit cum s`a tras la Revolutie, noi am fost martorii a trei schimbari de bancnote si monede, noi am ras la bancuri cu Bula, noi am fost primii care au auzit`o pe Andreea Esca, noi suntem cei care mai tinem minte emisiunea „Feriti`va de magarus". In weekend-ul asta mi-am instalat noul serviciu DTH (direct to home) de la Romtelecom, Dolce.
Am facut comanda vineri pe la 16:00 si duminica la 09:00 am primit telefon ca vin in 30 minute sa instaleze. Singura chestie pe care le-o reprosez a fost ca nu m-a anuntat nimeni ca vin desi am specificat sa fiu anuntat cu 24 ore inainte ... Nasol a fost faptul ca antena trebuia montata pe bloc si a trebuit sa ma duc sa vorbesc cu administratorul, sa imi dea acordul seful scarii ca pot monta antena samd.
In fine, pe la 10:00 s-au apucat de treaba. O chestie ciudata, avand 2 STB-uri, a trebuit tras cate un cablu de la antena de pe bloc pana la fiecare STB, in total 95 metri de cablu din care 40 metri gratis, deci 20 metri pentru fiecare STB.
Pe la ora 13:00 au reusit sa termine montatul antenei si au inceput sa instaleze STB-urile. Activarea primei cartele a durat cam 5 minute, celei de a doua can 25 minute. Download-ul de soft a mai durat si el cam 5-10 minute pentru fiecare STB.
La 14:00 aveam Dolce functional pe ambele STB-uri.

Aseara am cumparat din MediaGalaxy un cablu optic si am conectat STB-ul la receiver, pot spune ca se aude excelent, desi este doar stereo. Nu stiu cand o sa transmita Dolby Digital 5.1, dar sunt pregatit :)

I was staring to receive some 30-50 mails a day with trackbacks, of course, SPAM so
I had to put an extra check, "trackback link" verification. So now is kind of a pingback.

Essentially, a Pingback is a signal (ping) sent from Site A to Site B. However, it's also a link. When Site B receives the notification signal, it automatically goes back to Site A checking for the existance of a live incoming link. If that link exists, the Pingback is recorded successfully. This makes Pingbacks less prone to SPAM than Trackbacks.

Trackback
A Trackback is simply an acknowledgment. This acknowledgment is sent via a network signal (ping) from Site A (originator) to Site B (receptor). The receptor often publishes a link back to the originator indicating its worthiness. Trackback requires both, Site A and Site B to be Trackback enabled in order to establish this communication. Trackback does not require for Site A to phisically link to Site B.

pure-ftpd on openWRT and passive mode

In the tutorial below I will show how to install pure-ftpd to work behind a NAT box in passive mode.
I use this server on my Asus WL-500gP router at home. This tutorial can also be used to install this server on another machine behind the main router.

Here are my iptables rules for pure-ftpd to work in both active an passive mode behind NAT.
On the example below, 10.0.0.1 is the router. So, if you have the FTP server on another internal computer you need to use forwarding_rule instead of input_rule.
I will also change the default 21 port to 30021, for security reasons. This is done from iptables only for the WAN. Inside the network, port 21 will be used.

Below are the rules for iptables

First of all, I was supose to fly with ageean airlines, but when I got to the airport, I found out that I was flying with blue air. Well, that sucks, but hey, the lady at the agency lied, that's life. The flight was supose to leave at 23:00, instead left at 00:05. Blue air left us there (almost 100) waiting, no reason was given for the delay. At 02:30 we arrived in Corfu, and at 03:30 at the hotel.

This hotel is great. Four and a half stars, food is great, looks great, pool is nice. It's very close to Heraklion, like 30 min with a regular taxi. The beach is nice, it has a beach bar, water sports, volleyball.

You can find a rent a car service right inside the hotel that has decent prices, for example for a Citroen C3 (gas) with air conditioning, 29 EUR per day.
Kokini Hani is a small and quiet town, but if you are looking for night life, there's Hersonissos near by.

I finally got the Wi-Fi WPA1 connection running at normal parameters with these values

wl0_crypto=tkip
wl0_akm=psk psk2

WL-500gP seems to have a problem with WPA1 compatibility when running in WPA1 & WPA2 TKIP+AES mode. WPA1 & WPA2 TKIP seems to work fine. Below is a photo of PocketPuTTY connected to the router.

Here's a simple way to "change" the default SSH port for WAN (the internet) on OpenWRT routers. Let's access SSH from port 23000 for example.
Add the folowing lines to /etc/firewall.user

# SSH open on port 23000

ctorrent running on OpenWRT

Using ctorrent with large files might be a problem on Asus WL-500gP. This is because ctorrent needs more then 32 MB of RAM. The solution is to use a swap partition on a external storage device.

The Swedish web operators behind raided site Piratebay.org will seek damages from the Swedish authorities if they can prove their innocence, according to a statement on the site earlier today.

The statement, which promised that the site would be functional again within a day or two, said that those behind the site "can receive compensation from the Swedish state [if] the upcoming legal processes show that [Piratebay] is indeed legal."

However, a Swedish legal expert has denounced their intended defence as "silly".

Swedish police staged a spectacular simultaneous raid on a series of premises holding the servers hosting Piratebay.org, confiscating the servers holding the site and bringing the site down.

The site was accused of being a source of global internet piracy and itself claimed to be the world's largest BitTorrent search index. BitTorrent is a technology which makes it easier to transmit large files, such as music or films, over the internet. In itself it is not illegal, and Hollywood studio Warner Bros has just agreed to use BitTorrent to distribute its material.

One pressure group associated with the site claims that the Swedish police were misled and incompetent in their actions.

"[Anti piracy group] Antipiratbyran has clearly misled the police in this case," said Tobias Andersson of Piratbyran, a spin-off of Piratebay.org dedicated to promoting file-sharing. "They seem to have convinced incompetent police that the servers in question are filled with copyright protected materials." The Piratbyran statement said that there is "no illegal material on the actual server".

The servers contained not media files but links to BitTorrent files containing material. Christopher Wallin of the IT group of Swedish law firm Delphi & Co said that this is not likely to be a successful defence. "Our opinion is that that is silly. That is an argument they have been making for the last two or three years," said Wallin. "They have committed a contributory offence, it is a contribution to copyright infringement."

Though no direct representative of the site could be contacted, a statement on the site said: "the necessity for securing technical evidence for the existence of a web service which is fully official, the legality of which has been under public debate for years and whose principals are public persons giving regular press interviews, could not be explained. Asked for other reasoning behind the choice to take down a site, without knowing whether it is illegal or not, the officers explained that this is normal."

The copyright law in Sweden has been more lax than in other European countries, though recent changes have brought the law more closely in line with that in other nations. Sweden used to be known as a music and film pirate's haven because downloading copyrighted material without a licence was not an offence until last summer.

"Uploading was always an offence but downloading was not," said Wallin. "That changed last summer. The law was not so much changed as clarified."

"This is a very important development for Sweden, a country which has recently acquired a reputation as a haven for copyright infringement," said John Kennedy, chief executive of recording industry representative body the IFPI. "The Pirate Bay has damaged the legitimate music industry on an international scale and I am very pleased that the Swedish authorities have today taken such decisive action against it."

Asus WL-500g Premium

Yesterday I bought an Asus WL-500g Premium wireless router to replace my Netgear WGR614. First impressions, well, it's much more advanced, I can install custom firmware on it like OpenWRT, dd-wrt or Oleg's Firmware that turns this box into a mini PC running Linux. And like any Linux distro, I can install cusom apps like httpd, cron, sshd, telnel.

Netgear WGR614 is a great router, very stable. I have been using it for over a year now and I had no problems with it. I am replacing it with a much better one. The Asus WL-500g Premium has 2 USB 2.0 ports that can be used as external storage, webcam, printer. I tested the webcam feature with an old Philips webcam I had since 2001 and worked great at 320x240. With a higher resolution 640x480 did not work. Anyway, I am happy with the new router. This weekend I will install sone custom firmware on it, I have not decided yet witch one.
