The perfect Direct Connect cheat : GhostoDC

Posted on 10/04/2006

In the photo below you can see the extra options I added to oDC :

GhostoDC 1

1. do not allow others to search in your files
 - with this option enabled, GhostoDC will answer the hub nothing on every search
2. do not allow others to download your list
 - with this option enabled, GhostoDC will answer other clients trying to download the list with "no available slots". This is not a very good option, becouse is very easy to detect
3. do not allow others to see on how many hubs you are
 - this option tells the HUB that GhostoDC is present on only one HUB, so that HUB/slots ration is always good
4. do not allow others to download from you
 - this option tells the clients trying to download that no slots are available
5. do give fake list
 - with this option enabled, GhostoDC will give the fake list

With these options enabled, there is only one way that a detection client will be able to detect GhostoDC.
The detection client downloads the list and if it finds a small file < 256 KB, it tries to download it and receives the no slots available error.
This tells the detection client that is a hacked client. This can be avoided simply by filling the fake list with big files.

In the photo below you can see the shared directories and the total share.

GhostoDC 2

In the photo below you can see the fake share editor. It simply uses the internal notepad utility to edit the files/directories.

GhostoDC 3

In the photos below you can see the fake share as any other client will.

The ideea to make GhostoDC came to me in 2003 after a conversation with Assassin. Earlier that year I had written phpDC, a direct connect PHP client. To code phpDC I had to learn the direct connect protocol.
Since then, I have used this client succesfully with 0 detections to date mostly on Romanian hubs, but also many others hubs from all over the world.

Last year after trying unsuccesfully to connect to foreign hubs, the error was that oDC is an old client, I modified StrongDC++ with the above options.
I am still looking for a replacement to oDC, one of the most popular direct connect clients ever.

Below you can see the latest version of LDC++ fake detector failing to detect GhostoDC

GhostoDC 6

This client is not public and probably never will be, so do not ask for it.
I've written this article to show that cheating on direct connect can be done flawlessly.
